Negative space is measured using shadows, could not understand the concept

Space left after filling with text or colours is called -ve space and portion which is occupied is called  ve space.
Correct me if my thinking is wrong directional

Any image/shape in design, if the negative space or shadow is not there then the image/shape would look flat and 2-D. Shadow and negative space helps the images/shapes in any design to look like 3-D. That is why it is ,measured using shadow.
